Blogiversary - 11 years of Blogging

Hey everyone, 11 years ago I started Girls in the Garden and it happened to be on a Saturday, also.  Saturday, August 26, 2006.  I started with a post about fabric cards

A few days later I posted my first garment post, Simplicity 4281 and I still have this jacket, I love all the details and the fact it was my first make.  Plus it is fun to wear,

Then my latest project, the embroidered tunic.

There are so many things between the first and latest project.  People I have met online and in person and the relationships that have developed.  The sewing knowledge I have gained from the online community.  New fabric stores and pattern lines to try.  Changes in my family with additions of
son-in-laws and grandchildren, changes in jobs and a new sewing room!

I am so grateful for the opportunities that sewing and my blog have given me.  I  feel so blessed to be part of the online sewing community and I want to say thank you.

Thank you for following my blog and my instagram, thank you for leaving such incredible comments and sending such sweet emails.

I am going to give a $25 to Style Maker Fabrics.  Just leave a comment about anything and I will draw on Monday, the 28th .  Entries will close at 8 PM Central Time on the 27th.

Winner of Jelly Roll

I am a bit late with the giveaway but busy weekend and only 10 entries your chances were good to win a jelly roll from this quilt

Congrats
Gorgeous quilt and love the funny name for it! We have all sorts of "inside joke" names for things. It's funny how things stick. Two of my favorites are we still call bathing suits "baby soups" and the TV remote "the rope". All courtesy of names the kids said when they were little. Miss those days of cuteness coming out of their mouths every other word. :)

email me your mailing address and the quilting fabric is on the way to you.

Famous Frocks - The Little Black Dress - Review and Giveaway

The nice people over at Chronicle Books sent me a copy of their new release sewing book
Famous Frocks - The Little Black Dress
by Dolin Bliss O'Shea

cover photo from Chronicle Site - link above

from the Chronicle website:
Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly. . . . Each of these women had an influential take on the most classic wardrobe staple of all: the Little Black Dress. In this chic sewing book, patternmaker Dolin Bliss O'Shea pulls inspiration from famous LBDs throughout history—including Mary Quant's mod mini, a classic wrap dress worn by Liza Minelli, Princess Diana's smart A-line, and more—and offers patterns for reinterpreted versions that are perfectly stylish. Including 10 full dress patterns with sewing variations to make 20 garments in all, a primer on sewing techniques, vintage photographs of style icons, and full-color shots of the finished pieces, this book has everything fashionistas need to bring timeless style right into their closets.

This is a lovely, lovely book.   What makes it so lovely you ask?  Well, the substantial cover, the full-size patterns for 10 garments, the layout and photography.  40 pages of general sewing instructions

Here is the inside cover with the patterns in the envelope

Let's talk about the patterns - the black dress patterns are inspired by famous women through the years from Coco Chanel to Kate Moss with a variety of dress choices to suit many tastes.

I plan on making one of the dresses in the future (or it could be a skirt or top - these patterns are included also)

Now the fun part, I was sent a book and Chronicle Books kindly sent me a second book to giveaway on my blog.  So leave a comment  and I will draw a winner on
Friday, October 10th!

Giveaway #6 - Marks 8 years of Blogging

For the last 6 months I have been having a giveaway to commemorate the
8 years
I have been blogging.  On August 26, 2006, I entered the blogging world.  Since that very first post, blogging and the sewing community has been such an amazing adventure.  I have made new friends, had new opportunities and just enjoyed every minute of blogging.

These giveaways have been a way for me to say thanks to all of you.  Thanks for your comments, encouragement, knowledge and  above all your friendship.  I have had the opportunity to meet several other bloggers and it has been so exciting.  Even though I have not met many of you in person, I feel such kinship and friendship with you.

For this final giveaway, I am giving away another  gift card to Mood Fabrics.

Just leave a comment on this post to be entered into the drawing.  What type of comment?  How about if you are still sewing for this season or looking forward to the new season..

I will close the drawing on August 15th and announce the winner on August 16th

Disclosure - the gift card will be purchased by me and emailed to you in the amount of $50

Upcoming Anniversary Giveaway #5

I looked at the calendar today and it is the end of June, which means  2014 is halfway over.  Please tell me how that happened?

This summer has been wonderful with some of  the best weather.  I have been enjoying my bike, evening walks, dips in the pool and playing in my flower gardens.  I have found quite a bit of time to sew and  just completed a quilt that has been one year in the making (Hurray! and pictures after I have it quilted).  The one thing that I have been not keeping up is blogging and reading blogs.

So I need to announce what the giveaway #5 is for my blogging anniversary.  In August, it will be my 8 year anniversary of blogging.  I have had 4 previous monthly giveaways to celebrate this milestone.  There will be one more giveaway in August for the 6th and final giveaway for the 8 year anniversary

A Girl Charlee gift certificate in the amount of $25.  In fact, my polka dot top was one of the garments  featured on their Knit Picks for June.  Thank you Girl Charleed

I will draw the winner on July 14th.

Let's see to enter, leave a comment about your plans for the second half of the year, or your plans for the 4th of July or your plans for the second half of summer.
