Burda 6/2008 #124

Erin liked this shirt from New York and Company

and asked me to make her a shirt like this one.  I thought about drafting my own pattern then remembered one in a Burda Magazine.  Off I went digging through all the line drawings and I found 6/2008 #124

Pattern Description: Asymmetrical V-neck tshirt with side gathers.

Sizing: 34 to 42

Instructions:  They were easy to follow and the pattern pieces were clearly marked for the gathering.

Likes/Dislikes:  I liked the pattern was just what I needed to recreate a similar look to the NY&Co top.  The fit and the finished look of the top were likes too.

Fabric:  An ITY knit from Gorgeous Fabrics

Changes:  I went from the v-neck to a round neck, elimnated the uneven hem and used the cap sleeves from Simplicity 4076.  Also, I ended the gathering 1" from the hemline, I didn't want to stitch the hem through any gathering.

Conclusion: Another fun top for my daughter. She told me she liked it and I am waiting for her to wear it and see if I need to make any adjusments before I make another one.

I have one more top for Erin and it needs hemming, then it is my turn!

Simplicity 2580

Description:  Misses  dresses in 2 lengths with different top choices. I made View C and omitted the sleeves for Erin.

Sizing: 6 to 22

Instructions:  They were good and easy to follow.  The bodice on View C is the same as the bodice for View D. The only difference is connecting the loop on View C.   I did have to keep the pattern piece handy to make sure I had the bodice going the correct direction.  It is self-lined, with a fold to have the front and the lining all in one.  Lots of interesting angles, to form this draped front but easy to get it turned around possibly.

Likes/Dislikes:  They are mostly likes:
  • the neckline choices
  • the drape and fit of the dress
  • ease of construciton.
  • the overall look
one dislike:
The loop pulls the bodice up funny.

Fabric:  A wonderful knit from Joann's, just a fun fabric for a 20-something young woman.

Changes:  The last dress I made for Erin was too long by 3-4". The pattern envelope shows the shorter version below the knee on the model, I knew this wasn't a length Erin wanted.  Plus, I was short on fabric, I folded up the skirt by 3" to make it shorter and save fabric.   I still took a 1-1/2" hem in the skirt after this change.

Conclusion: Erin wanted a dress from this fabric and picked a couple of patterns she liked. I think it turned out fabulous. It was quick and fun to make.

I had to take pictures in front of my beautiful weeping Cherry tree.

Butterick 5327

Description:  From the envelope - MISSES' TOPS: Tops A, B have tucks along front neckline. A: beads between tucks. B: ruffled sleeves. Tops C, D have front and back tucks. D: sleeve casing and elastic. A, C: hip length. B, D: below hip length. All tops have stitched hems.

Sizing: XS (4-6) to XXL (24-26)

Instructions:  The instructions were easy to follow, I liked how they added a step to reinforce the shoulder seams to prevent stretching in this area.

Likes/Dislikes:  My main like is all the different views to dress up a knit shirt.  The only dislike, my pleats don't want to stay flat. Oh yes, one more, it is quick to sew.

Fabric:  A silk jersey from Gorgeous Fabric

Conclusion:  This is a very quick garment to sew but the results are great.  I wore this last week on a spring break mini-trip with the twins.  It was pretty cold and rainy so I layered it with a long sleeve tshirt and it looked very cute.    Meredith wants view A with the beads at the neckline, which I found some that will work  at Joann's last week.

This garment concludes my "gray" sewing, 4 garments total (two jackets, one cardigan and one tunic).   I didn't realize I had so many solid gray fabrics in my stash!  It is a good thing I really like gray at the moment.

The tunic length with the picture lightened

McCall's 6084

Description: Cardigans A, B, C, D have cascading shawl collar with shaped front hems, wrong side of fabric shows. I made view D with the long sleeves.

Sizes: XS to XXL ( I cut a Small).

Instructions:  They were easy to follow.  The hardest part of the cardigan is the collar but the instructions are easy to follow.  Once this step is completed, the rest is easy and the cardigan is quick to sew.

Likes/Dislikes:  Another variation of the cardi-wrap.  Simplicity and Jalie have one of these in their pattern line and I have made both of those patterns.  I picked this one up at a pattern sale at Joann's and thougth I would try another variation.  Each of the patterns have bits and pieces I like from each.  This one I like the collar and the sleeves.

Fabric:  I think it is matter jersey or something similar I purchased from Gorgeous Fabrics a few months back.

Changes:  My only change was not to hem the garment, except for the sleeves.  There would have been quite a bit of hemming, so I left it off.

Conclusion: I might sew this one up again if I found the right fabric. I do enjoy wearing this type of garment.

One more thing to like about this pattern/style of garment, is the many ways you can wear the cardigan
