Fire Truck for Little Guy

When a 4 year old little boy, who calls you Nana wants a fire truck bed, you find a way to make that happen.

His mom, my second oldest daughter, knew he wanted a firetruck bed but didn't want to make the one he saw on Pinterest.

Erin asked me if I thought I could make a curtain for the bottom part of his new brown wooden bunk bed.  The bed is lofted now with an entire play area under the bunk.

Well, I went to Google Images for a Firetruck and sketched out this .  I did put his name on the sketch and firetruck but I have taken it off of all pictures.

A trip to Joann's to get the fabric and exact measurement for the bed, I started cutting and sewing.

Here is some close ups.   I used a flower planter for the tires and used a couple layers of
Pellon SF-101 to help stiffen the tires.  The stripe is white cotton with a layer of SF-101 to prevent the red showing through.

Speaking of the red, it is a cotton will, a nice weight for the curtain.  The windows are a vinyl and gray cotton for the front bumper, door handles, etc.

My last step was to embroidery a sign for the door.

My firetruck finished and waiting for grommets.

Now a recap of his reaction when seeing his new bed.  He jumped up and down, dove under the curtain and then figured out there was two parts so he could easily go in and out the middle.

After checking it all out, he put on his Fireman coat and hat and proceeded to rescue all who needed help. In fact, the family had to eat dinner in the "firetruck"!

  3. Oh what fun he's going to have! One of my grandson's "needed" a cape with a hood just so for a Star Wars character he enjoys dressing up as and playing with his friends. I rarely have sewing time now that we adopted and have a little one, but I used his sketch, found a pattern to modify and immediately made the cape. I completely understand your happiness at making your grandson his firetruck! I hope you got tons of pics!

  5. Really wonderful. What a terrific Nana you are! And you have amazing talent to pull that all together from your head. Plus, think of the bonus of having all the messes hidden behind the fire-truck curtain. Sounds like a win/win for all.
