In May, I made one for Meredith. In June, I made one for Kaitlyn:
and in July, I will be making one for their friend.
Great bag, easy to make, good instructions and very big for all your summer needs. Maybe in July, I should make myself one, too!

Burda 7489- shorts
Pattern Description: This is a pattern for a tunic, jacket and shorts. I made the shorts.
Sizing 32 to 44, I cut a 38 (12)
Instructions: They were good, Burda patterns are easier to follow than the magazine. I thought I would change up the steps for the waist facing but ended up having to unsew, the instructions were right (I should have listened!)
Likes/Dislikes: Ever since I saw Shannon's blogpost on these shorts, I knew I needed to make a pair.
I like how they turned out, very RTW, hubby couldn't believe I made them. The beltloops are fabulous and the cargo pockets.
Now to the dislikes - I made a size too big, I hade them belted to stay up. I will go down a size next time and take about 1" from the crotch depth, my pair are very highwaisted.
Fabric: Stretch cotton sateen from Joann's. It feels wonderful, is lightweight and cool, plus sews like a dream. I have some navy blue to make another pair of shorts.
Conclusion: If you are looking for a great looking short pattern, check out this Burda. Just double check the sizing and crotch depth.
I am hoping they shorts shrink quite a bit in the washer and dryer, fingers crossed.

Cake and Happy Birthday
Erin asked Kaitlyn to make her wedding cake next May, quite an honor. So she is practicing for the big day. My dad's birthday is today and we celebrated on Father's Day.
Erin wants ribbon around her cake, so Kaitlyn tried this on my dad's cake
And to decorate the top for the big birthday!
Happy Birthday, Dad.

Simplicity 2313 this time with a zipper
Okay, it is almost 100 degrees with the heat index today (at least that is what the weatherman said this morning) and I am finishing up my spring jacket. Technically it is still spring, granted the last day and they are calling for 50 degrees during the night this week, so I might wear it.
I made view A for Erin back in March, here is the blog post and the review. I wanted teh zipper view for me, that is view B.
I used a cotton twill from Joann's.
Changes: Added 2" to the sleeve length. The pattern calls for 2" wide elastic but even after adding the length I was only able to use 3/4" elastic. Also, the pattern calls for twill tape for the drawstring, I just cut a piece of fabric and made my drawstring. I took a bit out of the sleeve cap, helped to ease the sleeve with no puckers.
Now to the zipper, the size the pattern envelope calls for is perfect, so if you are adding or subtracting length, adjust the zipper size. When sewing in the zipper, I stitched it to the front first. Then checked to make sure everything looked fine. Then stitched the bottom of the front and the facing. Checked to see if the zipper matched up and the hem matched up. Finally, I stitched the front and the facing, checking again to see if the zipper was even on both sides. That seemed to help and if something was a bit off, I had a lot less to rip out.!
Here are pictures and it was a bit windy, so the arms are flying around:

Butterick 5495
Description: Loose-fitting tops A, B, C, D with front drape gathered into loop, dropped shoulder, seam details and stitched hems. A, B: sleeveless. C, D: short or long kimono type sleeves.
Sizing: 8 to 22
Instructions: Easy to follow and great illustrations.
Likes/Dislikes: I have been seeing this garment all over the sewing blogs and on PR. I really wanted to make it and had just enough fabric to get it cut out. I had used some of this fabric for a top for my daughter.
This top is super-flattering and just looks great.
Changes: Added about 1" to the length. Next time I will raise the deep v-neck.
Fabric: ITY knit from fabric.com
Conclusion: I am going to get more fabric and make this one several more times. I might even lengthen it and make a LBD.
Meredith took four pictures of me and in three my eyes were closed and here I am squinting, so this one wins!

Pillow Swap
I am a member of the flickr group, The Pillow Talk Swap, and it is time for round 5, limited to 50 participants. I got lucky and got my name in at member #48! Yea.
The last few nights I have been working on a quilted pillow top, using this tutorial at Sew Mama Sew. I really enjoyed making this spiderweb block and also was very happy it was only an 18" pillow top! This block is very sewing, pressing and cutting intensive.
Each person involved puts up a mosiac of quilts and pillows they like. My partner likes bright colors using star and spiderweb patterns.
Here is my pillow:
I participated in this swap in November 2010 and made a pillow that could be used with either the front or the back. I wanted to do this again so here is the back:
I used some strips leftover from the front and made the back. I work we have a nice grommet setter (graphics business and we use the grommets for banners)and used that to set the grommets. Much easier than my handheld grommet setter. The ribbon is stitched to the lower piece, inserted through the grommets and tied. My partner can flip the pillow if she wishes.
I hope my partner likes my pillow, I sure did have fun making it.

New Pillows
I did a bit of sewing last week, new pillows for the family room. I used this tutorial for some of them.
I also used these new pictures for some brighter colors in this room
Here are the pictures:
Sharing this on Tatertots and Jello

This pillow was from a quilt magazine |
I used my ruffling foot and pleated a long section of fabric and then stitched it onto a felt base to make the flower. Most of the fabric is Fandango (moda) |

Summer Time
Oh my gosh, it has been over a week since my last post. Summer is in full gear around here and we are busy watching the twins play softball, starting the wedding planning, sewing some quilt items for my friend, gardening, swimming and doing some home improvement.
I have been staining the deck and front porch - 3 coats on the deck, 2 on the front porch - using this product
Kaitlyn and Mike went up flying with our friend and she took my camera. You can see my work, I cropped the pictures quite a bit so very blurry.
I finished the quilt for my friend but forgot to take a picture, will get one later.
Now I am making a quilted pillow for The Pillow Talk Swap 5 (found it on Flickr) here are the fabrics I am using but I took out the green, just wasn't working. I am using a spiderweb pattern. Pretty cool quilt pattern but I am really happy it is only a 16" block!
Next up some new knit tops for me.
