Tula Pink - City Sampler: 100 Modern Quilt Blocks
It is finally finished!!! I started this quilt back in May 2013 and finally in September 2014 it is finished.
The book is one of Tula Pink's
I used only my scraps for these quilt blocks, following the suggested color ways so I could use the layout on the front cover.
I worked pretty hard the first couple of months and then it got pushed aside. The beginning of summer, I really started working hard on the blocks. May to Mid-June, I would make one block everytime I went into my sewing room. This method put me to 60 blocks very quickly.

brightened a bit too much but you can see the block details |
Mid-June was a turning point, I just had to finish this quilt, All my focus was on finishing this quilt, which I did in about 2 weeks. I was thrilled to post this picture on Instagram on June 28th. The quilt is so big, Meredith had to stand on the truck bed to hold it up and off the ground.
The quilt top sat in the house waiting to go to the long arm quilter for a few weeks, just waiting my turn for the budget! Now it is back from the long arm quilter and bound. I love, love this quilt, the 16 months from the start was so worth it.

fabric from a bag I made, from my own pattern |
One other thing I love about this quilt is the memories of the fabric, one block has the fabric from the Erin's flower girl dresses , bags I made for Paige and her sorority sisters, many bags I made for the twins through school and other quilts or projects.

Rail Fence Quilt x 2
Hubby and I are back from a 5 day trip to Door County, Wisconsin. It was a beautiful area and a fun vacation but a bit different, the first time in 27 years that a summer vacation was just the two of us. Tell you the truth, it took me a day to adjust but we had a great time. I do think one or two girls will go with us next year on vacation, their summer school/work schedules just did not allow it this year.
On the road trip, I finally got around to hand sewing the binding on this rail fence quilt.
I am teaching this class at my friend's quilt shop, in a couple of weeks. It is just a 3 hour morning class in a workshop form. I like her method for classes, you leave with the knowledge of the technique. Then you can finish the quilt top at home.
This quilt took 2 jelly rolls, which in Free Spirit have fewer pieces than compared to a Moda jelly roll. For instance, most of Moda's have 40 strips of fabric, this Fox Field had 30 strips.
My quilt top was quilted by my local long-arm quilter. Some of you have asked, she charges per square inch.
I had just a few blocks leftover from this lap size quilt, so I made another baby quilt.

Another girl baby quilt for my baby quilt stash. I really need to get busy on some baby boy quilts!

City Sampler Sewalong Block 7,8 and 9
Time for the posting of my latest blocks for the sewalong
All three blocks together:
Block 7
Block 8
Block 9
These are fun to make and give me something to sew, the serger is still in the shop. It was suppose to be ready on the 13th. I called and they said, sorry it has one machine before your machine and then it will be your turn. I am so ready to have my serger back.

City Sampler Sewalong Blocks 4 to 6
I posted just over a week ago about participating in a quilt block sewalong. Each week there are three blocks to be made, so here are my blocks 4 through 6.
I am enjoying making these little blocks. They take about 15 minutes each and are a fun to sew.

Participating in the Tula Pink "City Sampler" Sewalong
Meredith won a poetry contest at school and the prize was a $25 gift card from Barnes and Noble. She has been wanting a quilt book and ordered this Tula Pink book
To coincide with her book order, I found a sewalong for these blocks. Just 3 blocks a week and the plans are to be complete in January. I really liked all these blocks and with my serger in for repairs and won't be back until June 13th, I went ahead and joined this sewalong.
My self-imposed rule is to use my stash and scraps, this is very possible as each block is only 6-1/2".
Here are my first three blocks, I am trying to follow along the color illustrations in the book. My thoughts are it will give my quilt a more cohesive look.

Modern Alphabet Quilt
I have to show off this modern quilt Meredith completed recently, it is Tula Pink's Modern Alphabet
Meredith's quilt is brighter and I love the waves quilting the longarm quilter used
Here is a close-up of the quilting:
and a close-up of a few letters:
The fabric is Anna Maria Horner's Field Study and it is gorgeous. Meredith's favorite one? The leopard print followed by the feathers.
The main tip on this quilt we have is to use lots of plastic sandwich bags. I cut it out for Meredith and put one letter per bag with the letter in marker on the outside of the bag. I have to admit I did cut a couple letters out wrong and had to recut for her. That is a lot of cutting!
Meredith did a beautiful job and I have been trying to encourage her to start a blog but she isn't too interested yet. I do want to document her quilts and put them out there for people to see. I think she does such a nice job and she is bitten by the quilting bug!
I do need to get her to bind them, that is my job right now and she is keeping me busy.
