Two Boy Quilts

As many of you know, I make lots of baby quilts and keep them on hand for gifts.  Lately, the baby girl quilts are far outnumber the boy quilts.  In fact, Kaitlyn took the last boy quilt for a shower gift and I was in need of one boy quilt very quickly.

This boy quilt went off to a newborn little guy last weekend.  It went to  one of my hubby's golfing friends and the young couple had their first child.  I went with this fun little animal print.
This pattern I found online but didn't pin it so I cannot remember the source.  I do know it is a fun pattern to make and it is quick to make.

A quick little how-to.......
I cut the print into 5" squares and the stripe into 5 x 2-1/2" strips and then cut the white solid into
 2-1/2" squares
To sew:
  1. sew a white square onto the end of one of the 5 x 2-1/2" rectangles
  2. sew a 5 x 2-1/2" rectangle to the 5" square
  3. Finally sew the strip from step #1 to the block set from step #2
Here is a close-up of the blocks.

I arranged mine with the stripes meeting together but you could set the blocks in whatever pattern you would like

Mike gave the present to his friend.  Later he asked Mike where did you get the quilt and Mike responded Lorit made it.  I think they love the gift even more!

One more pictures.

I had lots of 5" squares left and I just couldn't let them sit there, right?  This pattern is my own design.

I went to my scrap bin and cut 5 x 2-1/2" strips at least 2 in each fabric.  I then sewed the strip on each side of the 5" square.

I had several 2-1/2" white strips, which were sewn to one side of the block set.  Every other row was started with a white strip.

Last step is to sew the rows together.  Here is a close-up of this quilt pattern.

At least now I am back to one boy quilt in the closet which is so much better than none.

  3. I love both ideas! I, too, try to keep a couple of baby quilts on hand and it does seem like girl ones pile up faster than boy ones do. Oh man, I need to make both of these!

    1. What is it about the girl fabric, right? Thanks.

  4. Follow-up question - it appears that you maybe ended up with 6.5" finished blocks on a 6x7 layout. Am I close?

    1. first quilt, is a 6 x 7 layout. Finished blocks, let's see 5" square, would be 4.5 after seams, sewn to a 2.5 inch block. 2.25 after seam. So that is 7.25, right? Hope so - 3 am and I can't sleep so hope I am doing that right!

    1. Thanks, Donna, I hate to waste those scraps but I also have quite enough full yardage to use, too!

  8. You are so generous to make and give away so many quilts. All of your recipients are so lucky!

All my friends had boys except one who had 2 girls and 1 boy so I'm with you about more boys being born than girls! (I know our sample size is too small but still...)

I love these! They're so bright and fun! You are so wise to make these gifts ahead of time! I did that for the first time with little dresses- I just made them when I had some scraps and the inclination and all three of them are already gone! I'm really enjoying quilting these days and need to start channeling that energy into baby quilts or I'll be overrun with quilts! :D
