Lola Dress from Gray Ribbed Ponte

The Lola Dress by Victory Patterns, has been in my collection since seeing Ginger Makes on Mood Sewing Network back in April.

Girls in the Garden - Lola (Victory Patterns) dress made with gray ribbed ponte

I had this lovely ribbed ponte (it feels like ponte) which I thought would be perfect for this dress.  Sorry, I don't remember where I purchased the fabric.

Line Drawing:

I love, love this dress, from the "v" detail, which is the wrong side of the fabric to the hem band.  Every detail is wonderful.

I started with a size 10 based on the measurements on the guide.  Well, that was too big, it looked like a sack.  I unstitched the skirt from the bodice not once but twice to get the sizing right.  I think I probably will make between a 6 and 8 next time I sew it and there will be a next time.

I omitted the pockets, since my fabric was thick.  My thought process was no more thickness to the hips.  Those pockets are fabulous and add to the dress, next time they will be on my dress.  Also, in retrospect, I am not sure I had fabric to make the pockets this time.

I lengthened the skirt 5" just to be safe and I hadn't determined if I wanted the bottom band.  In the end, I wanted the band on my dress.  With this in mind, I took off 3" from the dress.  Here is a lightened picture to show the lines of the dress and the bottom band.

The top of the dress, might be a bit big but I can live with that little fold at the shoulder/bust.

This is a fabulous dress, easy to construct, looks great and is fun to wear.

The back, not a great picture with the bunching at the middle of my back but it gives you an idea of the look of the dress.

I am on the hunt for more fabric for this dress, anyone have some suggestions?

  14. This pattern is kind of like a sack (unless you are super skinny, and like a 12 year old boy- without any curves). That is why I got it for my 12 year old daughter. I love the style, and since you took it in, I feel like it would work for me as well if I were to do the same. I LOVE this pattern. I also bought it after seeing it on Ginger Makes.

Oooh, I love this on you! It's really cute! The fabric looks extra cozy, too. I really like that, although it's a really casual dress, it has princess seams, so you can kind of take it in here and there however you see fit without too much irritation! I didn't need to make any size alterations, but my fabric barely had any stretch, so if I make it in something stretchier it will be easy to take in.

    1. thanks so much. You are right on the stretch of the fabric. I also have a bad habit of always picking a size too big!
