McCall's 6886 - Floral Knit

McCall's 6886 from Mood Fabrics' floral Scuba Knit

This fabric grabbed me from the first time I saw it online and I knew I had to have it.  I was not sure what I wanted to make but I knew I needed to get this floral to my house.  The fabric is Italian Red and Orange Floral Scuba Knit and I am happy I order quickly because it is sold out.  Don’t worry, Mood Fabrics’ has several other scuba knit options.  Here is one with lots of red.

Fabric arrived and now it was time to pick out a pattern.  I went with McCall’s 6886 for the simple lines and Lucy of My Love Affair with Sewing’s many fabulous dresses from this pattern. The main factor for this pattern was the simplicity of the dress and it was what I wanted for the fabric, less lines so the fabric really made a statement

One more factor for this pattern, it was quick and that is what I need for summer.  Anyone else have trouble finding time to sew in the summer?  I love to be outside, swimming, gardening, walking and playing with the grands.

I went with a size 14 in the bust, 12 in the waist and hips.  According to the pattern, the neckline is just folded under and stitched.  I wanted to bind the neckline and had a bit of black ponte, just the right color for the contrast.  I read several of the 206 reviews on Pattern Review and several commented about the extra fabric in the back.  I went with two darts on each side of center back,  taking in right at the small of my back.

So this fabulous dress was cut out and sewn in one night and it is ready to pack in my suitcase next week.  What is your favorite quick dress to sew?

  1. Beautiful dress! I love the pattern on it too - I see SO many scuba knits that are pretty but sadly there is absolutely NO WAY I can wear it. I can't imagine the heat it must generate against your body (and I already generate enough of my own!) so I stick to naturals which can be limited with respect to vibrant prints.

  2. WOW! Just WOW! This dress is everything. I mean. That fabric is gorgeous and you were so smart to go with a simple silhouette. And that pop of black binding!! Genius!

  3. I love your dress! And I feel very jealous when I read that you can cut and sew one dress in one evening!

  4. It's lovely and Summery Lori. I have that pattern and now I'm tempted to make one too. Thanks for the heads up about the back shaping.

  5. Hi, I am such a huge fan and love everything that you sew,the floral print and contrast binding really makes it pop. I have a question regarding this pattern. I have sewn this pattern twice and I was wondering if you needed to include bust darts as well as the fish eye darts in the back. You have inspired me to sew the pattern again trying the scuba knit. Blessings, JL

    1. Thanks so much! I did not use bust darts, just the fish eye back darts. Good luck with sewing your scuba knit and this pattern.
