Butterick 6244 - Coat

Butterick 6244 wool coat made from Mood Fabrics' wool coating

Okay, first off, I love, love, love this coat and you all are going to have picture overload.  I was so pleased with the coat and I just kept taking photos.  This is the road in front of my house and for the longest time no one drove by.  It was a great spot for photos, so I just kept pushing that remote

Now for some information, the pattern is Butterick 6244, a Lisette pattern and the coat description...

Semi-fitted, unlined coat (wrong side shows)
has front extending into collar, flat-fell seams, narrow hem,
and shaped front hemline longer than back

The fabric is Mood Fabrics' Camel Solid Coating, which is flanneled so one side has a more brushed look.  I used this side for the inside but rolls to the front for the collar.

There is a 3-part tutorial at the Lisette site to help with this coat.  I did use the tutorial to clarify a couple of the pattern instructions.  Particularly, the dart in the front by the collar.

The instructions call for a flat fell seam, which I did for all the seams.  The sleeves are a bit tricky to get this done but doable.  The most important thing is to go slowly and try to keep your stitching as straight as possible.  I did do about half from one direction and the other half from the top of the sleeve.  Butterick's instructions do not have you flat fell the shoulder seam but I did do this as well.  I really felt like all the rest of the inside was so pretty, I needed to make that part pretty also.

Sizing is 12 at the shoulders and bust, tapering to a 10 at the waist and hips.

The Lisette sewalong, suggests for the hemming to baste a 5/8" line to help keep an accurate hem.  I did this on the front, hem and sleeve hem but also added a 1/4" stitch line.  I felt that made it even more accurate to turn under 1/4" and then again at that 5/8" mark.

I think I covered all the sewing points but not the time. This coat is very quick to sew but it doesn't look that way.

I am going to head on down the road, just enjoying my new coat!

  4. Absolutely gorgeous! I sometimes wonder when instructions for unlined jackets and coats call for "fancy finishes" for seams in the body, but leave the shoulder and armhole seams without much attention.

    1. Thank you, the instructions are different. They probably are just finishing what will be seen if the coat blows open.

  12. This coat and the fabric are just gorgeous and look wonderfully flattering on you! Do you have an edge foot for your sewing machine? That will guide your stitches evenly and makes this kind of edge stitching so much simplier!

  16. Perfect in every way! This is a coat I could tolerate. I cannot wear anything heavy around my neck, and in my climate do not need a heavy coat. This is beautiful!
