Quilts for Boys

You know how I like to make baby quilts, right?  Well, my baby girl quilts are plentiful while the baby boy quilts were non-existent.  I had to fix this problem and quickly.  One of Erin's good friends was having a boy and I needed to get a quilt completed for her.  Instead of making just one, I made two quilts.  One to give to Baby A and one quilt to have for the next little guy.
Here is the one that went to Baby A at the end of January.  I found the pattern doing a search on Pinterest but guess who didn't pin the pattern.  Yep, me and now I cannot find the exact pattern.

Baby boy quilt made with blues and reds and greens from a charm pack

You can check out a closer view of the patchwork and the quilting design.  Here is something similar to my quilt and a free download from Daisy Jane

charm pack quilt for a baby boy

How I created this quilt was to cut a the 5" squares in half, which are also known as a charm pack.  I then chain stitched them to a 2-1/2" WOF white solid.  After completing all the chain stitching, I used my rotary cutter to make the white strips 2-1/2" wide.  All that is left is stitching the 2-1/2" strips together in rows, alternating the white square to opposite sides.  These rows have another 2-1/2" strip between them and a colorful border added to complete the quilt.

One thing I do like to do when making a baby quilt is to make sure it does not get wider than 41 inches.  Keeping this under this measurement mark keeps me from piecing the back of the quilt.  I can just buy straight yardage in a fun print for the back.  Usually I can purchase less than 1-1/2 yards for the back.  Thanks to Meredith, my local quilt shop owner for this handy tip.

The next quilt is in my gift closet waiting for the arrival of another little baby boy.  I do have a pattern for you and it is called Storytime Squares Quilt which I did make one change.  Her pattern calls for 5-1/2" squares, I used another charm pack (5" squares).   I did have to adjust the length of the white borders.

My draping on the chair, doesn't give a clear picture of this quilt but you get the idea.

You will be seeing more of this fabric in future baby boy quilts.  I had a friend give me quite a bit of it in the form of charm packs and layer cakes, which was so sweet of her.  I do think I better get busy on a couple more boy quilts, one in the closet will not be enough!
Do you have a quick quilt you like to make?  Any suggestions for a pattern for me?
Thanks to Chrissy Crafts the here is the tutorial for the first quilt - The Zipper Quilt

  4. Both quilts are very pretty - love how the white makes the colors pop. Do you do your own machine quilting ? I haven't mastered that & usually just stitch in ditch, but yours looks stunning

    1. Thanks, Mary Ellen, I do not do my machine quilting, I send it to a long arm quilter. It is not too much for a small baby quilt.

I started out making clothes, then made a few quilts, then got busy traveling with my job, am now back to making clothes but LOVE LOVE LOVE quilts & might throw those into the mix again too. I need to get faster at making stuff though!

    1. It is fun to mix up the clothing and the quilting. The new fun prints and colors in the quilting cottons pull me right in. And the times when I am feeling "fluffy" (LOL) I can make a quilt and not worry about fit.

  10. Love these 2 baby quilts. I've made the first one several times. Found the pattern in a quilt magazine many years ago. It used 4" x 7" rectangles and one 4" x 4" square. It goes together very quickly and you can make it as scrappy as you want. I general cut my leftovers from other projects into 4x7 rectangle and keep until I get enough to make a quilt.

I plan to make your 2nd quilt using leftover charms. Thanks again.
