Paper Cut Patterns Bellatrix Blazer

A few months ago, I ordered

  Paper Cut Patterns' Bellatrix Blazer

and it sat for a bit until I found some fabric.   The fabric found me, a sale email from Mood Fabrics  A lipstick red cotton sateen

Since I got this sateen at a great price, $5/ yard , I just went full blast into sewing the jacket.  I thought this would work fine for the first time.  I put up a picture on Instagram and SewBusyLizzy commented" the sizing is quite generous."  I had traced a Medium but after this comment, I went back and retraced between a small and a medium.  I found SewBusyLizzy to be quite right after completing this jacket and will go down to a straight small next time.

I added 1" to the length of the blazer, on the upper fronts and upper back.  Also adding 1" to the front piece and sleeves.  I will omit this addition to the body of the jacket next time but add another 1/2" to the sleeves.

I found the instructions fabulous and it doesn't take long to sew.  In reality, it takes longer to trace the pattern, cut out the fabric, fusible interfacing, and lining.  The instructions have you fuse the interfacing to all the jacket except the back and the sleeves.

I do think the back is too big, way too big all around.  What do you think?

The lining requirement are minimal and I had this fabric in my closet

so I used it!

In my opinion, my fabric is too stiff for this jacket and that is some of the issues.  That and the sizing I selected, you can see it here it the front, too.

I left off the buttonhole and button from this blazer.  I just thought it wasn't too necessary with the longer lapels.  I also, just used the welt pocket flap on the front but they are decorative only.  I did not add the pocket bag as I really didn't think I would ever use the welt pocket in the jacket.

I looked at the two reviews on Pattern Review before and after I finished my jacket.  After looking at these pictures and at the ones an PR, I might prefer the shorter length for my next attempt at this pattern.

So to summarize - great pattern drafting and instructions, it goes together absolutely beautifully but the sizing is generous.   I am going to try it again, in a fabric with a softer hand, tracing a smaller size and using the shorter length.

Don't you think this jacket would look totally different worn with pants or jeans?

Now do you have suggestions?

  1. I agree with you, it does look too big overall. I love your striped shirt/skirt (or is that a dress?) Very cool.

    1. It is a dress, Kyle, thanks. I think I am going to take the jacket up at CB for now and call this one good.

  2. It is a little too big, but that is not so bad when it comes to a jacket. It does look fantastic.

    1. You are right, Isabelle, sometimes it can mean more layers underneath. I do like the color and style.

  3. I think it would look great with white jeans and a stripped tank or t. Also in the fall would be great with jeans, camel belt, and navy t or white blouse. It does look a bit big but not so much that it overpowers you. May check this pattern out for myself!

This is so cute on you! It looks really nice with the stripes! It is a bit big, but not so much that you shouldn't wear it! I need to make a cropped version, too. I love the way the sleeves are curved at the wrist so they're longer on the back of your hand than on the palm- so nice!

    1. Thanks, Lisa, I think a bit of alterations in the center back will make the jacket look better and fit better.

  6. Okay, so it's a bit big. But with some creative darting (stitch them on the outside) it will be perfect. It can make your jeans to a traditionally dressy casual level. Wearing it with a white tee and white jeans, tan accessories and a leopard clutch and the outfit is sophisticated casual. In the cooler months wear it with an ivory turtle or cowl neck lightweight sweater and camel trouser and dark brown accessories and it's casual chic. I love what you do, Lori. You're always an inspiration.

  7. I like that jacket...it looks nice on you. The first thing I noticed was how nicely your collar and the lapels lay...in both the front and back. I do like the length and I love the lining!!! The back looks slightly big, but personally I would want it a little generous for ease in wearing over any top.

  8. Love the red fabric . I think the back looks big and maybe back length is off also. From side and front looks good. With you sewing skills I am sure you can make some fitting adjustments.

    1. Thanks, Linda, I think I will go down a size or size and a half in the back and shorten the length. I added 1" to the length and I might not need that.

It is a bit big, I do like the colour though. I wanted to make a cherry red Bellatrix for Daughter No2's collection, so maybe after I show her your make she'll give in! I've only made the cropped version & I love how little fabric it needs.
