Good sewing and bad sewing

First the bad news on sewing. I made this pattern, Simplicity 3790. I did go check Pattern Review but no reviews, so I proceeded. I made the bottom right view, really wanted the view on the model but it is getting too hot here and I hadn't found brown fabric. Not too original but I love the look and the belt. My fabric was cheap interlock from Joann's with no recovery. I really, really dislike my finished garment. It is big and floppy and just bad. I went by the finished garment measurements on the pattern and decided to go down a size. I could have gone down another size or two. Oh, well, the first wadder from Simplicity in quite a while. I think it is more my taste than the pattern. I like a more fitted style and this is just too relaxed.

I actually had the twins take my picture in the finished garment. They thought it wasn't too bad, but they are 12 and live in athletic shorts!! This in mind their opinion doesn't count but it was very sweet of them to try and boost my confidence!

Now to the good, a young family at church just had a little girl. I bought this fabric from Needle Nook and made Ottobre 3/2006 #5. Very quick romper with an invisible zipper in the back.

Here is a close-up of the gingham elastic.

I can't wait to give it to them. I have another baby girl gift to make, a co-worker and his wife are having a baby girl anyday now. You sure do forget how small they are.

  1. Lori, sorry about the top. Oh well there is always more fabric and patterns. You can safely toss this one and replace it with ten more. [evil grin] Love the baby romper. Very cute!

Being that I'm a newbie when it comes to sewing, I think it's looks pretty good. I'm still working on pajama pants and crafty things. But I think the more I read some of these sewing blogs, the more I will be inspired to venture out.

Love the baby romper. What a sweet gift.

    Have a blessed day!

Sorry about the top - I'll stay away from that stretch at Joanns! I love the romper, so cute!

  5. I think the top looks nice on you but if it doesn't make you feel good, throw it in the Goodwill bag! One of the many benefits of sewing for oneself - not a huge financial investment and probably didn't take you much time either.

That romper is ADORABLE. LOVE the fabric.

  6. I like the top! But I understand the feeling. I made something similar awhile back and in the end it just wasn't me. Looking at it as honing more of your sewing skills.

  7. Isn't it frustrating to have a vision, sew it up and it just doesn't work? In the photo it looks great, but I'll take your word on the fabric. And that romper is adorable!

  9. first time here - love your blog! i made the brown top the model is wearing (Simplicity 3790) in a stretch pink... i had so many hopes as this was only my 3rd project - but it came out HORRIBLE, lol! Since i'm a complete beginner, i thought it was me, but after seeing a couple of reviews on PR, i realized it was probably the pattern. i could've gone down about 3 sizes, i was swimming in that top :)
