My Little Dinosaur

After several years of not making costumes, I am back in the costume making business.  A dinosaur for my little guy and I am bias but I think he is the cutest little dinosaur.

I used Simplicity 1767 for the base of the costume, it was in his size.

This pattern is just a sleeper with a shorter zipper.  It went together quickly and all I changed was added more elastic to the hood.

These were all cute costumes in this Simplicity 1767 pattern but little guy's mom wanted him to be a dinosaur.  So I used Simplicity 1765, this one was in the larger size range but worked perfectly for the details.

I shortened the tail, added spikes to the back of the costume and to the hood and it was really starting to look like a super cute dinosaur.  I just wondered how I was going to attach the tail.  Well, little guy's dad said, you can't attach it, he won't be able to sit in his carseat.  Oh, yes, that is right, so the tail is attached with 3 snaps.

The tail is heavy and does weigh down the bottom of the costume but it still is so cute.

His parents took him to five houses and he performed for everyone.  In fact, he loved crawling in his costume.  Oh, yes, one more addition, I used the breast plate (or whatever you might call it) from the larger pattern for the front.  I am so happy I used this detail, it really adds to the costume.

Now a dinosaur has to be able to walk on the back legs and this little guy can do it ......with some help from his mom

You can see in the above picture, I didn't quite make the tail proportional, it hangs a bit low.  Good thing you only have to be a dinosaur for a couple hours so a low hanging tail isn't too much of a bother!

One thing I know for sure, this cute little face makes this Nana's heart melt.

Hope you had a very Happy Halloween!

Musical Performance Costumes Complete

The above pattern is Meredith's choice for her costume for Scrooge in December at high school.  Here is here costume:

Meredith plays the cello and with the long fitted sleeves, she wasn't able to move her arms to play her cello.
Suspecting this, I made one sleeve, then attached it to the bodice and had her try it on.  Yes, limited movement.  So now short sleeve gown!

Kaitlyn didn't want the same pattern (of course, what do you think we are twins or someting ha ha!)  The real reason - this pattern is too girly.  The music director told them a skirt with blouse and an apron would be a good choice.
Working from this pattern:

I made this:

The pattern calls for 3 skirt pieces, I used 2 pieces only, wanted the look of a slimmer skirt.  Also, I adjusted the blouse a bit smaller, the bust measured 45" on her size!  Making the blouse with less volume, allowed me to make an apron from the leftover yardage.  The blouse still is so full, Kaitlyn cannot tuck it in, makes her skirt too tight.

Now this is how the photographs don't tell the whole truth - In person, Kaitlyn's costume is beautiful and looks so much nicer than Meredith's gown. I think it looks the opposite in the photographs.

Mark that off my list, hurray!  Now I am working on another anthro-inspired top.

News on my Riveria Jacket - big, big oops.  I tried to fix my oops but my topstitching thread matched too perfectly to the fabric, this led to a nice big whole in my jacket.  New fabric is on the way!
