McCall's 7562

McCall's 7562 used for a top from Mood Fabrics' tencel denim

Beautiful tencel denim from Mood Fabrics and I knew it would be perfect for a dress.  Now are you saying, Lori, this isn't a dress?

I would say, yes, you are right!  I tend to sew with a jump, I just jump into a project and this is the case with this pattern.  I went with McCall's 7562 for a dress, mainly for the great sleeves.

Now I ran into several problems along the way with this dress.  First it is very bit, I just kept taking it in on the sides.  Next the neckline is huge.  I really wish I had not cut the front opening and just used a round neck like Deepika's

Take a look at this photo, I cannot get the one side to stay up, it just wants to sag down.

My neckline looks a bit low but let me tell you it was so slow until I put two darts in the back neckline, taking it up about 4" total.  I didn't dare bend over before the darts or everyone would see my belly button!

Now why isn't it a dress?  I just hated it as a dress, it did nothing for me and I knew I would never wear it.  So out came the scissors and I cut it off.  I do like this now and know I will wear it.  It is just so fun and I feel quite stylish it in - just take a look how excited I am!

If you are like me and want to make this pattern, make some changes, mainly in the neckline, raise it up, put in some darts in the pattern to take out some width before you cut into the fabric.

Learn from me and maybe you will have a dress and not a top!  I am just happy I was able to pull a Hail Mary and have something from my beautiful tencel denim.

What has been your biggest save?  What do you think about my save?

  1. Why not insert a string of beads across the front neckline? It will look as if it was intended and will keep the neckline in place.

    1. That is a good idea, Julie, I might have to look into that.

  2. While I love sewing with tencel fabrics they can be tricky and have no stability - hence floppy necklines. I have the same issue when sewing one of my favorite fabrics - rayon challis. Your top did turn out cute.

  4. I have this pattern and hope to make it up sometime this summer. I will keep your warnings in mind regarding the neckline and loose fit. Yours turned out really cute as a top though - great save!

  6. I looked at that fabric at Mood. Did you use the 4.5 or 6.5 Oz fabric?

  7. Your finishes always make me want to attempt clothes sewing and then I get realistic - I'd have no idea what to do with the issues I'd run into and probably don't have enough patience to figure them out. I'll stick with quilting but I so enjoy reading about your adventures. Great job!
