NIght Sky Quilt

August 2014 I took a class at my local quilt shop to make Jay Bird's Night Sky quilt and after the class the quilt lingered for a very long time in the storage container.  After the first of the year, I would work on it sparingly.

A group of us sew on the 4th Wednesday of the month.  One Wednesday I grabbed my container and went to work on this beauty.  It is about a twin size and I love how it turned out.  Jay Bird Quilt's Sidekick ruler is amazing and makes for the most perfect quilt blocks.

I had planned to make this a queen size quilt but I  ran out of steam and motivation.  The lack of motivation was quickly followed by no more reddish-pink fabric.  This was like a sign, the quilt is finished!  I was thrilled with the look, the size and the fact it was done.

My local long arm quilter did a custom job on this quilt.  A custom quilting job is more pricey but I felt this quilt deserved something special.  I love how she quilted it and it is just perfect.

I have several quilts going, which is so different than my garment sewing.  I always finish a garment before starting another one.  With my quilting, I buy plastic storage containers and keep all the fabric and pattern together.  This system makes it so easy to pull out a quilt and work on it in small stages.

  1. What a stunning quilt Lori! I love the dark background. I am also a quilter and garment sewer. I find it nice to do a little patchwork between garments.

    1. thanks, Lisa, I am so thrilled with the colors. I find the patchwork relaxing and really helps when I am feeling very unsettled. Just sewing straight lines I can handle that.

  2. This quilt is so pretty & I love the colors . You always mange to balance your sewing, quilting etc. Quilting is slightly easier than garment sewing to put aside for a time . Great job

    1. Thanks, Mary Ellen, you are right quilting is easy to set aside. I have started making myself notes on pattern instructions when I have to leave a project for several days.

Lori, this quilt is absolutely stunning!! I really love it. The contrast between the navy and pink is really striking, and I love how you combined so many different pink fabrics into the stars/flowers. And the quilting is jaw-dropping! The long-armer did a fantastic job. All that piecing work truly makes for an heirloom piece. I hope you get lots of use out of this quilt over the years. :)

This is so, so pretty! My garment sewing has been pretty lousy lately, so I haven't really felt like sewing. But I cut out some quilt blocks today and it's reenergized me! :) Quilting really scratches a different itch, doesn't it? And like you said, it's nice that you can work on it a little bit at a time.
