Tribal Maxi Skirt

As I have stated before, Meredith and Kaitlyn are 5'9" and 5'8" respectively.  This makes Meredith taller than me, Kaitlyn the same height (until I start shrinking- ha ha).  A difficulty with being tall, is finding  RTW maxi skirt which is not a midi skirt!

I had planned on using the new McCall's maxi skirt, 6966 but I did not order enough fabric.  I will use that pattern later but for the immediate need for a maxi skirt, I used this tutorial.
.

I purchased this beautiful tribal knit from Girl Charlee, which is sold out now but here are some other tribal choices.

Her skirt is a bit long in these pictures, isn't it?  Well, it looks  like she is wearing it lower than when I hemmed it!  Also, she will be able to wear some heels with this skirt if she wishes.

The tutorial just has the waistband piece holding up the skirt.  My fabric was a bit thin to hold up all the weight of the maxi skirt.  I added a small 1/4" elastic in the waistband, just before the turn down part of the waistband.

One more thing you can tell from the shortage of fabric, I was unable to center the larger part of the design.  It is offset on the front and back, which I think makes the skirt look just fine.

Go take a look at that tutorial, it is a winner.

While on the subject of winners, I think I am currently a winner in Meredith's eyes!  She has a maxi skirt that does not hit mid-calf.

  3. Feel your RTW pain, my daughters are 5'8" and 5'10" so it is a struggle and me 5'9" (for now LOL). Great skirt I will have to check out the tutorial and I also love the McCall's 6696 too. I will put that on my list for the next sale at Joann's

    1. All of you are tall, wasn't it terrible growing up trying to find pants and jeans that didn't look like high waters?
