Mood Fabric's Stretch Cotton Skirt -McCall's 5523

This winter has been a very long and very cold one for much of the United States and I for one am getting quite tired of it. So if I can't beat the cold temperatures, my wardrobe can add some warmth to winter. Color.... bright and bold to counteract white snow and gray skies. For the brightest and bold color, I picked Mood Fabrics' Nanette Lepore Orange Retro Print Stretch Cotton, it is just a mid-winter's dream. I love this pop of color, gives me hope spring is coming (only 40-some days away)
.

My pattern for this fabulous fabric is McCall's 5523, a skirt that is business in the front, look at those classic lines

but then a bit of party in the back. I wanted a pattern that would add a bit of fun to this vibrant fabric and this McCall's pattern does just that. In fact, there is four choices for this lower back. I felt the pleats matched this fabric.

I purchased just a yard of this fabric and I was so lucky to get this skirt out of the yard. I have made this pattern before and know it runs long. I used the petite adjustment to take an inch from the length, which is a bit ironic since I am 5'8" tall. It was a good solution to shorten the skirt and to match the horizontal lines at all the seams.

I used an invisible zipper on the side seam of my skirt. One thing I do like to do when matching on a zipper is to stitch a small section and then check my alignment. I feel this makes it easier, if the fabric print is not aligned, I just have to unsew a small bit. In this case, my horizontal lines matched perfectly, so I just stitched the full length of the zipper.

This fabric was wonderful to sew and pressed like a dream. I know I will wear it all year long and enjoy the bright and bold colors. Here is one final shot, this one shows off the fabric and the skirt the best. Mood Fabrics' Nanette Lepore

The skirt must of worked, it is going to be 40 here this weekend.  This post appeared first at Mood Sewing Network

  5. LOVE this fabric - definitely a boost for our grey weather. Did you line this skirt? You are the quickest sewer, and you have a job and a baby in your house! How do you do it? You always make the nicest clothes!

    1. I know, I love this fabric, too. I did not line this skirt, just wear a slip (old-fashioned sounding isn't it). I don't know about quick sewer, just hide in my sewing room when the family is watching TV shows I don't care to watch! Thanks so much, I really appreciate it.

  6. Very cute skirt! I have a similar Vogue pattern but worry that as I sit all day the pleats at the back will get all messed up.

    1. Thank you, Vicki, I think the pleats are low enough on this not to get to messed up in the chair.

  8. I love vibrant prints and this is gorgeous! I really need to check out this pattern since it would be perfect for work. Thanks for the tip on lining up the print at the zipper. I just used your Steam-A-Seam tip for putting the back pockets on some jeans I'm sewing.

  13. After seeing your post, I went straight to the Mood website and ordered the fabric. It has arrived and is already pre-washed, even. Now I have to decide if I should sew a dress (safe option) or cigarette pants (slightly crazy option!). Gorgeous skirt, love those kick pleats!
