Colette Beignet Skirt

This skirt has many reviews and some great looking finished garments.  I love the front buttons, side pockets, belt loops and shape.
Picture from Colette Patterns

Description :High waisted straight skirt provides a very flattering shape with paneled styling: not too loose or too tight around the hips, with a very fitted waist. Buttons up the front, has side seam pockets, and includes a self tie belt, which can be swapped out for your own narrow belts. Skirt has a faced waist, button placket and full lining.

Sizing:  0 to 18, I made a 10 according to the size chart

Directions:  They are incredible, easy to follow and you have a gorgeous constructed garment when completed.

Fabric:  a stretch corduroy I have had in my stash for a couple of years.  I started this skirt while snowed in the house for a couple of days.  I ordered the buttons from Wood buttons and actually selected 3 styles.

Likes/Dislikes:  As stated earlier, I was drawn in by all the wonderful completed garments online, the lines of the skirt, the button front and the belt loops.  Dislikes - this style doesn't work the best for me, which I knew but the allure of this pattern just drew me in!

Conclusion:  From the side this skirt looks pretty good on me

'Then I turn to the front and things quickly change.
I think I am too straight up and down for this style.  It really doesn't do much for me at all.   I do think the skirt is a bit too big making it more shapeless.   I have two opinions from the twins, Kaitlyn says it makes you look like a bag lady!  Meredith says it doesn't look that bad an you, mom.  Mike (hubby) says the skirt with all the buttons, I liked that on the hanger.  You don't like it?  No, I don't at the moment.

So if this style of skirt looks good on you, yes, buy this pattern, it is wonderful.  If this style isn't great for you, invest in a different pattern.

I am disappointed, I really wanted this to work for me.

  3. So sad. The color is pretty and the wood buttons look great on it. But, like me, you are narrow hipped. I looked at the pattern several times and resisted the urge to buy it. I think it looks lovely on curvy women with a small waist compared to their hip. That is not me and my issue would be exacerbated by being short and short waisted. Wide waist bands are not my friends.

  4. What a shame you didn't like this skirt on you after all your work! It sounds like a fabulous pattern and one I think I might be tempted to try though.

  6. This pattern really is super cute, but I know I would have the same problem with being a rectangle myself. Have you tried wearing a sweater with it, instead of tucking a shirt into it. Maybe a sweater with a nipped in waist might help give you enough shape that you might decide to keep it.

  7. I really like this pattern too but I can't bring myself to make a high waisted anything because I sit down all day and I get those waist crease folds. Different reason but I still like this pattern.

    1. If I wear this skirt where it should be I would have 3" from bust to skirt!

  8. Thanks for the honest review. It might be a good one for me. I am pretty hip-y.
What a shame it didn't work out, especially after lining up all those buttons! Do you have a daughter it would suit?

    Hi Lori,

I actually like the skirt on you. I'd like t see you wear it with a fresh white blouse and a dark leather belt. It's a great casual skirt. Your work is amazing!!! I follow your blog and often wonder where you get all your time. May I also add your recent "lace dress creation for the Mood Sewing Network" is incredible! What a beautiful work of art. You are so talented. Your daughters have a very loving Mom. :)

I had the same problem with this skirt when I gave this pattern a try a few years ago. There was too much room in the tummy on this skirt. I tried changing the seams in front but it just didn't work for me. I still love button front style and just recently made Burda 11-2007-118. I love it and the fit is perfect.

  13. I have made this pattern twice - and I removed all the extra ease from it! I have an hourglass shape and found the extra ease around the hips/tummy made me look extra wide!

I took in all the seams - it now fits more like a pencil skirt!

  14. I think this skirt needs to be worn higher, closer to your natural waist. A jacket or sweater might help, but I'd pass it on to someone else or reuse the fabric and buttons for another project.

  15. Oh darn, don't you just hate those disappointments in our sewing?!
But we do learn a little something from them each time.
It's a great looking skirt, and I'm sure you will be able to pass it along
    to the perfect person.

  16. So glad you posted this! Seems that the closer our waist width is to our hip width, the less becoming a waist-accented skirt becomes...what a sentence! But thanks!

  17. ZI think if you were to change the belt to something that didn't blend into the skirt it might create more of a waistline. The skirt is really cute though.

  19. I had to laugh at your hubby's comment because it is exactly like something mine would say. I never ask him what he thinks of a project unless I really want to know. He will tell me!

Oh, I'm so sorry that you're not in love with this. I don't think it looks bad on you at all, but I'm wondering if the stretch in the corduroy might have given you a tad too much ease. As a straight up and down gal myself, I feel more comfortable in skirts that are pegged at the hem or that are nipped in at the waist and fuller at the hem (anything to give the illusion of curves!).
