McCall's 6996

McCall's 6996 from Joann's knit

I found this knit at Joann's and knew I wanted a cardigan so I ordered McCall's 6996 during one of the McCall's sales.

This is one of those projects I was super excited about.  It had a great combination of trendy fabric and pattern.  I wore this to church one morning and felt quite chic and stylish.

Then I looked at the pictures and my excitement faded.  I am feeling pretty neutral about this cardigan.  In fact, these pictures were taken over 3 weeks ago and I am just know blogging about this garment.  That is so unlike me, I sew, photo and blog quite quickly.

One thing I am very excited about is my matching.  The front band, front and sleeves look really good.  Yes, I am going to call out that success.  It was a bit of work but so worth it to make the front so seamless.  This knit has an irregular pattern across the width, so matching takes a look or two.

And finally the back.

This is a good pattern, quick to sew and has some nice shaping at the waist.  This shaping keeps the oversized cardigan look from being overwhelming.

What I would do differently if I were sewing it again.  I would taper the sleeves, they are wide and I like to push up my sleeves and they stay.  Going down a size would be the next thing I would do.  Looking at the pictures, I feel there is alot of cardigan all around me.  Maybe it is the print, but after looking at the photos, I feel too much fabric.

What am I going to do?  Well, honestly I have not worn this again.  I do think the next time black thread is on my serger, I will taper the sides a bit just to get rid of some width.

Any other ideas?  Maybe it is the styling that is throwing me off.

I do like the pattern and will make it again but will just change some sizing issues.  This is a perfect pattern for the busy holiday season, done in a couple of hours.

Note - these pictures were taken before I made the changes with the lens.  I really had to do some edits in picmonkey.

  4. I adore this cardigan. Your print matching is impeccable, bravo! I also find that knit patterns run too big and the sleeve never stay put and I too end up taking them in.

  6. I would take it up on the sides, taper the sleeves, and try it with a belt. I find that large sleeves make everything look bulky, and a few inches off the side will make it sit closer to your body. It's such a good pairing of fabric and pattern that it would be a shame not to tweak it to be perfect!

  7. I love this cardigan on you. The print is wonderful. If you can't do a quick taper on the sleeves right not, try a sleeve trick from the 80's. We used a rubber band or pony tail elastic (comes in colors) just around the wrist and them pushed the sleeves up and they stayed. The fabric folds covered the elastic.

  8. I also think this looks very nice on you. I can understand wanting to take it in if you feel there's too much fabric, but what about adding a belt or tie (if you have any of the fabric left). You did such a great job, I'd give it another go. Aren't we sometimes our worst critics?!

  9. It looks nice and very on trend, tapering to take up some fabric should help. What may be throwing you is that I think the print placement along your shoulders the white is making your shoulders appear broader then they really are. I think the pattern and think your changes will be perfect in your next garment.

  10. I love it on you! And the matching is fabulous. But I get it when you're wearing something that doesn't feel right. Try tapering the sleeves and even shortening them slightly. Maybe you're just not used to that much ease in the body, but from the photos it looks great.

  11. I'm surprised at your response to wearing this cardigan as my first reaction was 'I love it!!!' when I opened your post, LOL. Anyhow, I hope you can tweak it to your liking because it's gorgeous to me and I like your styling in these pictures as well.
