McCall's 6802 in Mood Fabrics' Turquoise Silk/Wool

Let me start this post by stating I did an injustice to this incredible Carolina Herrera Turquoise Silk/wool

It is a simply stunning fabric, much more silk than wool, feels like silk with a touch of wool.  It sews beautifully, presses perfectly and has a nice drape (not too much, just right!)

When I received this fabric, it had a much different hand than I was expecting.  What was I expecting?  More of a wool feel, more substantial feel was my expectations.  I really was puzzled what to make.  I think a blouse would be beautiful from this fabric or a dress but I am a bit paranoid about wool next to my skin.  As I have stated before, wool next to my skin just isn't a good thing.  Not a trait I like, I am missing out on all these good wool combinations.

So back to what to make.  I thought a drapey jacket, maybe a bit of a kimono look for the silk.
McCall's 6802
I went with view C, here on the model

I added 1" to the body and the sleeves,, made the pockets deeper.  Also, self-lined the pockets.

I came home from church and put it on with my New Look dress

It looks pretty good with this and I like it okay, the girls are not impressed with the look.

If you look at the picture closely,, I had to add cuffs to the sleeves.  The picture on the pattern envelope shows a longer sleeve, I added 3" with the cuff.

I did a French seam the construction and hand stitched the hem and facings in place.
It looks a bit better with all black

I love the fabric, not the pattern choice.  Quite disappointing, I feel like I wasted such fabulous fabric

I am open to suggestions, do you have any?

  1. oh lori, i did the same with a very simliar fabric, it's still in the ufo section of the closet! but i think your jacket hangs beautifully, and i love it with all black.

i know we all love pockets....but what about something drastic like making it more of a cropped jacket? it could even have a dramatic hem, maybe a curve or a something coming to a point in the front. you'd lose the pockets, but it seems like the weight of them might be too much for this drapey piece??

    1. That is a great suggestion. I might try to rework this and make it better than it was. I like the cropped idea, maybe incorporate a bit of the Victoria Blazer.

  2. The color is beautiful! I think in looks fine as is, but you could may turn it into a bolero type jacket or a "flowy" vest.

  3. I've been eying that fabric and the matching orange to make a colorblocked dress, so I'm glad to hear it's got such a nice hand. So sorry it didn't turn out the way you wanted! I truly hate when that happens with nice fabric!

    1. You will love the fabric and I like the idea of a color blocked dress, can't wait to see it.

  4. I'm sad that you don't love it. The fabric is gorgeous, and the color is beautiful. It just seems like something that loose should be longer.

    1. I agree with the loose and long. I might rework it and make it short and more close fitting.

  5. Hmm, looking at the photos, it seems to be too much colour. If you darted or seamed it so it is more body skimming it may look better. Good luck.

  6. I love this pattern and the Herrera fabric is to live for. I doesn't look terrible...but I know how it feels to be disappointed. Perhaps you could add some closure(s).... (no pun intended) i.e. buttons, snaps, hooks....just a thought. Give it some time......you'll figure it out!

  7. I don't know what there is about it that you don't like because it's beautiful and looks very nice on you.

  10. I like the idea of a cropped jacket with an interesting hem. Although I also think it looks nice with the black.

  11. I love this with the all black outfit. But if you do change it....the cropped jacket will look GREAT! I can even see the cropped jacket with elasticized sleeve and body hems.
