Plans Quickly Change

Remember a few days ago, my post on Meredith's graduation dress?  Well, it is not happening.  I had the bodice fitted (or at least I thought) and attached the skirt.  Something went terribly wrong!  The bodice back was crooked, the skirt too tight, the lining unacceptable.  I tried to fix it and it just got worse.

Meredith was disappointed, I was disappointed but we decided to try a top instead.  The fabric from Mood Fabrics is just too beautiful not to use.

I had enough yardage left and the skirt from the dress to make this pattern:

The top (dress view with shorter length) is cut out after making a muslin.  I am not going to underline it, Meredith will wear a camisole and we are debating the cap sleeves.

So the bad, is I didn't get the graduation dress made.  The good - I ordered 3 dresses from Penney's for Kaitlyn, so Meredith can pick from those.  And another good, Meredith will wear the top lots more than a dress.

Off to make this top.

Has this happened to you?  High hopes for a garment then in reality it just didn't work?  Or the picture in your head isn't close to the actual garment?

  2. Oh yes it sure has! Sorry about the dress not working out but it's good you're able to see the positives.

  4. I am dying to see this made up. There have been a lot of hot patterns I've admired and this is another one that falls in that category. I'm having a "make it work" moment right now, actually! May the force be with you.

  5. What a shame, but yes, I think it has happened to us all at least once in our sewing careers.
A wadder now and then can be expected, just not for as special an occasion as this!!

  6. I'm sorry that the graduation dress didn't work out, but I am so glad that you posted this! I was feeling really down about a blouse that I made that I thought I had muslined and had ready for a perfect fit and it just didn't work out. I'm building up my courage to jump back into another garment...You are inspiring me!

  7. Oh what a bummer! I am glad you are able to salvage the fabric and that there are 3 dresses on the way to choose from. This has definitely happened to me as well!

  8. Yes, that has happened to me so many times. You've made lots of other wonderful things for her, so try not to be down on yourself too much!

Awww man, I HATE when that happens. :( I'm glad you've got enough fabric left for a top, though... silver lining?
