McCall's 7906 - Stripe Twill

McCall's 7906 in Mood Fabrics' cotton twill

A new style of skirt for me and truthfully the fabric really makes the skirt

This is McCall's 7906 and this happens to be Sew Your Style pattern for March 2019.  This is something I have wanted to participating in and finally had the time to make it happen.  The fabric is Mood Fabrics' Cotton Twill with Embroidered Stripes  and I only had enough to make the medium length, using an one inch hem.

The waist is a bit big, I wanted the pleats to match with a certain pattern, which really shows up on this back photo.  It is a paper bag type waist, so the belt cinch it in.

I did cut the fabric one layer at a time, matching the stripes. The skirt has pockets, yea!  I did use muslin for the pockets, the stripes show through and I didn't want that look with the pockets.

The belt loops are cut with one stripe pattern.  Instructions state to sew RST and turn inside out, but I hate doing them that way.  I cut the fabric, serged one side.  The unserged side is turned in and then the serged side turned in.  Much easier than turning right side out.  A line of stitching down the middle holds it all in place.

The buttons are from Joann's, which only had two choices in the navy.  I did sew them on with my sewing machine, a bit of transparent tape to keep the buttons in place.  This works great to make sure the button doesn't move.

Now as I stated this is a different look for me, I usually am not the a-line skirt/dress type.  I just kept going back to this pattern and decided to give it a try.  For the photos,I played with three different blouses.

First gingham, a bit of pattern mixing.  This is fun but not sure I love it.

One thing I need to state about the instructions, early on the instructions have you hand stitch the front facing (button  and buttonhole band)  down but don't do that.  I had to unsew as this, you turn the facing back to finish the top and the hem.  So the hand stitching, or machine stitching as I did needs to be done right before the hem.

Here is my next look with a navy blouse, a more classic look

Why don't I like the a-line shape?  Well I am what I would call an "H" - same from my shoulders to my hips with little waist definition.  Look at this photo, straight on and not very flattering.   Lesson from this photo, don't stand like this!

Last up a more casual look, the  denim shirt!

I did work on placing the waist of this skirt just a bit lower, I do have a low waistline.  It is better and I like the chambray shirt, it makes this skirt very casual.

A couple more looks at this skirt, side and back to see the pleats

Some more thoughts

* the fabric was a bit stiff but after washing and drying did soften up.  It might have too much body for this style as it maintains the A shape quite a bit and doesn't drape

*I would have liked this more a bit longer, the weight would have softened the shape

*linen or chambray might be a great option

* I might had some elastic to the back to fit the waist a bit better.

*I did put in the pleats but I did not topstitch them.  I wanted to baste the side seams and try it on.  After I did that, then did the topstitiching.  As I stated my waist is a bit big, so I didn't do the best job on this part!  LOL

Here is all three looks together.

So I am going to try my new skirt a few times out and about and decide how I really feel about it

Which one do you like the best?

Any style suggestions for an "H" body type and this style?

  4. After losing $60k to this binary crypto investment in 2022, I didn’t think I’d ever trust any form of crypto investment platform again. Luckily for me I was able to recover the funds through this incredible Hacker Steve who understands everything about the blockchain network. It was an emotional moment for me but Hacker Steve literally saved my life. He was able to pull back all my transactions. I would advise anyone in the same situation to not panic cuz digital assets can be recovered.
