Simplicity 8093

Simplicity 8093 with front notched collar made from Mood Fabrics' blue plaid wool
Hey guys, another jacket to show you! I know a surprise for sure, right?  I do love a good jacket
I have been sewing several of these Mimi G patterns, so I went with another one, Simplicity 8093

I added 2 inches to the length and the sleeves.  If you look at the pattern envelope, it is a very short jacket and with my previous two Mimi G patterns, the sleeves run very short.
and

Now for the front notches, I made a copy of the front pattern piece.  I drew  the seam line and then cut that part away.  I then measured from the bottom of the front to place the notch at the same place.  I was able to trace this notch on the interfacing side and I could really see the lines.

The notches turned out very nice.

The lining on this jacket is some leftover gray in my stash and I was able to just squeeze this out.  One thing I didn't love about the pattern, was no back facing piece, If I make this again, I would add a back facing.  I don't love how the lining is right at the edge of the neckline.   I did change the lining to have a pleat at the center back, adding a decorative stitch

Finished measurements are something I really rely on for patterns, well, this one didn't have any.  At least none, I could find on the pattern pieces.  I went with a size 14, what I did with the suede jacket but this time it is a bit big and the sleeves are pretty wide.  If I ever made this again, I would probably make a 12 and might change the sleeve.

One thing about it, this jacket is quick to sew.  I took the most time cutting out the jacket, I matched the plaid from the bottom of the jacket.  It is hard to see but at the front and side front, the pattern has you gather the front piece at the bustline.  This is a great feature to add shaping at our curves.

The back view shows the extra fullness in the jacket.  My fabric is from Mood Fabrics and I bought it some time ago, maybe 2-3 years.  I kept buying fabric to make this Pinterest inspired blazer, isn't it amazing.

I never had any luck getting good plaid/solid matches.  What do you think still trendy and fashionable blazer?

Another notch view and a good photo of the wool.

One thing I did today, was work on my photography.  I had three lenses I wanted to try so for each lens I changed up my outfit a bit.  Then when I looked at the photos, I knew which lens was with which outfit.
The above photos were taken with my 50mm lens, which I rarely use but after seeing the quality of these photos will be my new favorite.
The first lens I used was my go-to lens.  I take almost all my blog posts with this lens 24-70mm 2.8
I purchased this lens when my girls played basketball and I was not having good luck with indoor action shots.  This one worked wonders but not as good on the blog posts.
These pictures are okay but not as good, granted the sun came out for the photos with the denim shirt.

The final set of photos were with my 80-210 4.5-5.5 lens and they don't even get to make an appearance!

A couple of questions:

1.  What is the best lens to use for blog photos?  I am thinking Stacy has a great answer for us.  Stacy, remember the Sew Forth Now podcast you so generously helped me with on photography?

2.  Other suggestions for styling this jacket?  My favorite is the denim shirt.

  1. Nice jacket. I may be really slow this morning, but was the purpose of the notch adjustment to lower the notch? Thanks!

    1. No I just used it to mark the notch so both sides would be the same.

  4. Lori, your jacket is marvelous! I sure wish I could wear a short jacket. Short torso and full bust me looks better with a hip length jacket. Aargh!

    1. Thanks, Cherie, it was so short without what I added, I knew I would never wear the shortest length.

  5. Beautiful jacket! Love both your "looks", but... How does it look with a white shirt?

    1. I might have to try a white one - I like the denim so I don't have to wear a cami, too!

  8. Well, first of all I love the jacket! That notch is interesting, and it looks great as a layering piece. It is so hard to decide the right size when they don't have finished measurements.

As for lenses, a 50mm or 85mm are great portrait lenses. They are the best bet for taking great pictures. The 85 requires a bit of distance, but it is by far my favorite. Not cheap, but you might be able to get some Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals. :)

  9. Lori, this jacket is beautiful! i have a very similar wool that I need to do something with and your idea may be the answer! I keep looking at the colors in the wool and think I am seeing a tealish color. Maybe that is my imagination? I really like it with the denim and the maroon shirt equally well. You look great in this!

    1. Thanks, Sue, there is a teal stripe running through the fabric, it is a nice piece of wool. I think you should make this one.
