Flat Fell Seams Tutorial

As I said in the previous post, I am using flat fell seams for this Anorak jacket.  A flat fell seam is "seam made by placing one edge inside a folded edge of fabric, then stitching the fold down. It includes a topstitched finish. It is useful for keeping seam allowances flat and covering raw edges." (Wikepedia source)

I took a few photographs as I worked on my flat fell seams

Step 1 -  Stitch the seam, press flat

Step 2 - Trim the seam allowance of one side to about 1/4"
The scissors are holding down the front seam allowance so you can see the trimmed seam

Step 3 - Press under the untrimmed seam allowance.

Step 4 - Edgestitch next to the folded edge.

  1. Thanks for this turtorial. My next project is a sheer fabric for a spring top this will be a great technique for seams.
