McCall's 7390

McCall's 7390 top made from Style Makers Fabric

Another new sleeveless top, McCall's 7390, which has several options and great lines
I went with View A from some nice Cotton and Steel Shirting from Style Makers Fabrics.  This one is sold out but Michelle has many shirtings to choose from.

I went with View A for all the fun use of the stripes and added 1" to all the pattern pieces for extra length.

I feel like the shirt on the McCall's model is looser than mine shirt.  In fact, I went with a size 12, my usual size and it looked like the right size according to the finished measurements on the pattern piece.

The bust and waist were good but the hips are snug.   In fact, I let out the bottom pieces about 3/8" on the side seams.  This helped but it could use more.  Next time I will cut out the size larger on the bottom pieces.

You can see, the back gets stuck on the hips.

This one took longer than the normal sleeveless top.  First, the cutting was in single layer to get all the sections to meet.  Next there is hand sewing.  The center front section is faced and then hand stitched to the center front and front side seams sections.  The collar is hand sewn in place, too.

The center front slit is matched very good and I am so pleased.  As you go down the center front seam, the matching isn't perfect diamonds but the diamonds do line up.

I didn't have enough fabric to use the Cotton and Steel from the front facing and used a lightweight muslin for the lining.  The muslin is a bit heavier and less drapey than the Cotton and Steel but it works.  I love how McCall's has you sew the front, which is similar to Vogue 9151

Another look at the front slit and neckband.

One more  look at the blouse, I just think it is quite a bit boxier than the front envelope.

I am mixed on this top, I love the principal - stripe fun but not sure about the shape.

I will give it sometime and see if it grows on me or wear it always with a cardigan!

  1. Lovely top! Just the thing for keeping cool. Perhaps the boxiness of your top is simply the way your fabric behaves. Looks as though the one on the model is more drapey(?).

  2. I just recently purchased this pattern and is on my list to sew next. I am wanting to use some fabric from my stash, just not sure what I want to use. I like your top and glad you reviewed it. Looks like a comfortable top for hot weather and one that can be casual or wear with cardigan for work or fun.

  3. I so enjoy your blog even though I never make clothes. I think the detail shows up a bit more on the stripe so maybe that's why you're not loving it? I think it will grow on you. It's a great layering piece. Bright jacket/sweater and white jeans/pants? Please please please make view B!
