Quilt Challenge

I posted in mid-September about the Emerald Challenge at my local quilt shop and my apron for the non-quilt category.  Well, my apron won!!!  Quite an honor as there were many fabulous entries, a gift certificate was my prize and I already spent it this morning.

In this post I want to share with you Meredith's entry into the quilt contest.

Meredith had every intention of  Tula PInk's Butterfly quilt pattern and emailed to see when it would be available.  She found out mid-September and that would be too late for Meredith to make an entry for the challenge.  The due date was October 1st but Meredith knew she had to make the quilt during summer and not after college started.  A friend suggested using graph paper and sketching out her own design

Meredith used the blocks from Tula's book  City Sampler - 100 Modern Quilt Blocks  for the wings of the butterfly

She finished this quilt the first week of August, plenty of time before she headed off to college

For the body of the butterfly, she used the ruffler foot and pleated some metallic fabric.  This really added some dimension.

Meredith tied for second in the large quilt contest and was very happy with this.  The competition was stiff and there are many talented quilters in our community.

Me?  I am so proud of her for planning the quilt, figuring the yardage, completing this project with beautiful results.

On another note, Kaitlyn announced this morning, "I want to make a quilt" so that is what I spent my gift certificate on.  She sewed all day and finished a lap-size quilt.  I will share it after the quilting is completed.

  10. Lori, you are one talented family! Meredith's quilt is glorious! I'm so happy for her that she won a prize; how nice for her to be acknowledged in that way. And your apron! What can I say, I am an apron lover and wearer almost all year round. That is one cute pattern. Even though I just completed an apron (without a pattern, which could only have helped), I'm tempted to buy that pattern you used. Oh and congrats on winning a prize for it!!! Thanks for sharing your sewing adventures.
